The 2nd Annual Diversity Gala benefiting Skyline Literacy and in Partnership will take place on Thursday, October 8th at CrossKeys Vineyard!

Skyline Literacy began in 1987 as a group of several independent adult literacy efforts who came together under the name Skyline Literacy Coalition.  At that time, our primary goal was to serve local adult learners who struggle with literacy, but we soon expanded that goal to include all types of adult learners, including non-native English speakers.  In May 2008, we moved from Dayton to Harrisonburg and changed our name to Skyline Literacy the name under which we currently operate.

In our 25 years of serving the Valleys literacy needs, the number of our adult learners has tripled from 100 to an annual average of 300.  We have also created a Citizenship Preparation class in order to help our adult learners who have emigrated from other countries obtain American citizenship, and weve added several satellite sites to better accommodate our learners.  As a nonprofit organization, we put the needs of our learners first and are dedicated to meeting to their needs, which is why weve developed a unique instructional approach that:

The brochure is still tentative, and we want your input. Take a look at the linked tri-fold document, and let us know what you think! what you like, and what can be improved.

Virginia House Delegates meet with the Diversity Council

At the last meeting of the Harrisonburg Rockingham Chamber of Commerce Diversity Council, the Council met with, not one, but two local Virginia House Delegates, Tony Wilt and Steve Landes. The main topics of discussion were the concerns of small businesses, and the desire to strengthen ties between the many diversity groups that make up our local community. Council members asked questions important to them, and made comments to help the Delegates understand the concerns of the members. The Delegates spent a great deal of time listening to the Council, as well as providing their own perspective as representatives in the state government in Richmond.

After meeting with the Delegates, the Council also discussed plans for the next year, including a signature event for some time in the fall months. Jorge Gutierrez of the BMOC Group will be providing the member spotlight next month. (More on that later!)

Lee Croteau of VBS Mortgage sat in for Veronica Amato of VBS Mortgage as chair. Sheena Sours Armentrout represented the Chamber. Charity Shahan of Northwestern Mutual acted as Spotlight Coordinator and introduced the Delegates.

About the Diversity Council

The Council is open to everyone, whether part of a diversity group or seeking to reach a diversity group. There is no membership fee. Just attend the monthly meetings. Free marketing opportunities, including networking with other members, business card exchange, member spotlights, as well as mentions in the Council Newsletter.

Meetings are the second Thursday of the Month (upcoming Jan 8) at Noon at the Chamber office in Harrisonburg, 800 Country Club Rd, Harrisonburg, VA 22802, 540-434-3862.
