Forever Chemicals a Perpetual Threat to Virginia Drinking Water

Its important for communities to question whats in their drinking water, said Carroll Courtenay, staff attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center. There's just no reason we should be waiting for a public health disaster before taking serious steps.

Virginia has only recently begun more extensive testing for the toxins. In 2020, Virginia's legislature allocated $60,000 to investigate PFAS contamination an amount environmentalists say is well below what's needed.

The effort has fallen to two resource-strapped state agencies the Virginia Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Quality and mitigation efforts are proving costly. Experts say it could create a heavy economic burden for decades to come.

It's important for communities to question what's in their drinking water, said Carroll Courtenay, staff attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center. There's just no reason we should be waiting for a public health disaster before taking serious steps.

I have been using the PrimoŽ Water Refill Station at Walmart in Woodstock VA

I've been using this water dispenser for several months now.
When I first started using the TDS reading low between 1-6.

111111

A TDS meter is an invaluable tool for ensuring safe drinking water. It is important to remember that not all contaminants can be measured with a TDS meter, so it should be used with other testing methods for the most accurate results.

I have noticed that my numbers have been going up over the last couple of months.

Last refill a few days ago the: TDS reading of 70.

My recommendation:

I have been running the Gal. Bottles of I buy Water through a Culligan ZeroWater Filter that comes with a TDS Meter.

Zero Water 10 cup Pitcher Unbox and Review - YouTube

BREAKING: March 14, 2023 The Environmental Protection Agency recently proposed new limits to tackle drinking water contamination from the toxic "forever chemicals" known as PFAS. The proposal targets six notorious PFAS: PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and GenX.

The limits, known as maximum contaminant levels, or MCLs, are the highest level of a contaminant allowed in drinking water. The MCLs announced are 4 parts per trillion, or ppt, for PFOA and 4 ppt for PFOS. For the other four PFAS the agency is proposing using a hazard index which is a tool used to address cumulative risks from mixtures of chemicals.

The best way to start to protect your family:

Reverse osmosis systems: The reverse osmosis filtration process separates water particles from contaminants larger than 0.0001 microns with a semipermeable membrane. RO is one of the most effective HAAs removal technologies, but it's also wasteful around 1-4 gallons of water are washed down a drain for every 1 gallon of water purified. Common applications for RO units are countertop, under-sink, and whole house systems.

Nanofiltration: Nanofilters use a similar process to reverse osmosis, blocking contaminants with a membrane that allows only water particles to pass through. Nanofiltration removes all contaminants larger than 0.22 nanometers (depending on the filter pore size). These filters are most commonly found as under-sink units.

We just changed out our water heater, In the last place, we lived we had a lot of lime buildup from the well in our tank.

But the Woodstock Town water left some lime with a lot of mud in our tank.

Now every month I hook up a hose to the bottom valve on our new hot water heater and run it under pressure to remove the sediment from the bottom of the water heater. This process works well and the water in the shower feels better and the dishes and glasses in the dishwasher do not smell funny.

Does all of Shenandoah County have high water pressure coming from Town water supplies?

We bought a townhouse on Waterbook Court in Woodstock VA and I had noticed when I was using the hose in the back yard that within a short period of time the hose would start to expand. I did not give it much thought I just figured the hose was not good. Then the lady that lived next door had a new faucet in her upstairs bathroom and the faucet malfunctioned 2 weeks later and the water was running for about 9 hrs., what a mess... it took a long time to get her place back, she and her 2 cats we staying at the Comfort Inn in Woodstock.

She was telling me that the water pressure is too high. So I went to Lowes and pick up a gauge that screws on the faucet for the garden hose and saw a reading of 116psi and it was going up higher in peaks I also saw 160psi. That night I started turning off the water while we slept.

Water Source Water Test Pressure Gauge-WSPGH100 - The Home Depot

I have a pressure reduction valve and that was not working right.

So I changed it myself.

The most common source of high water pressure is the municipal water supplier. If you live in an area with a lot of hills or tall buildings, utility companies need to pump the water at higher pressure levels to reach all their customers.

High pressure can cause underground water leaks that may require leak detection or water line pipe replacement or repair.

Most emergency leaks typically have high water pressure caused by failed regulators or no thermal expansion relief device. Pressure regulators come in all sizes. The common preset pressure is 40-60 PSI.
