What a smell a couple of weeks ago on Water Street in Woodstock VA.

Did you know that big commercial meat producers feed chicken waste to cows? An estimated one billion pounds of chicken manure, straw, feathers and spilled chicken feed (called "litter") are shoveled in front of cattle on feedlots each year, and the cows eat what's in front of them.

 

The practice is both disgusting and dangerous. Current rules already prohibit feedlots from giving cows meal containing beef by-products, because that's how mad cow disease is spread. But cattle by-products can be given to chickens. The chicken "litter" delivered to feedlots contains that banned feed.

 

It also contains bacteria and pathogens, including E. coli and Salmonella, antibiotics and other drug residues, and metals like arsenic, copper and zinc.

Would be good for the town if they stopped doing that! It can't be good for the children to drink that milk!

Few people are aware of what is allowed to be fed to livestock animals. One ingredient that is FDA-approved to be fed to cattle is chicken poop.

Its termed by AAFCO as Dried Poultry Litter, defined as a processed animal waste product composed of a processed combination of feces from commercial poultry together with litter that was present in the floor production of poultry.

In the US, the report says, the use of poultry litter in cattle feed is unrestricted while its use across the European Union has been banned since 2001 following the outbreak of food and mouth disease and BSE. Both diseases were attributed to the inclusion of animal protein in industrial animal feed.

Poultry litter is the agriculture industry's term for the detritus that gets scooped off the floors of chicken cages and broiler houses. Its mainly a combination of feces, feathers, and uneaten chicken feed, but in addition, a typical sample of poultry litter might also contain antibiotics, heavy metals, disease-causing bacteria, and even bits of dead rodents, according to Consumers Union.

 

I live off of Water Steet and a lot of times my eyes burn so bad when I go outside!

Please move your operation to another location where we people are not living so close to this kind of activity.
