Social Media Companies Finally Face Legal Reckoning Over Mental Health Harms to Children
The Trial Mark Zuckerberg Couldn't Prevent
Mark Zuckerberg appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom where he testified in an unprecedented social media trial by jury that questions whether Meta's platforms deliberately addict and harm children.
Estimates suggest that more than 100,000 children may experience sexual harassment daily on Facebook and Instagram, according to internal Meta documents. However, the true number of childrenaffected could be much higher, as indicated by a Meta researcher who warned of potentially 500,000 cases of exploitation per day.
Two trials are currently underway in Los Angeles and New Mexico, with additional trials expected to follow. The courtroom showdowns are the culmination of years of scrutiny of the platforms over child safety, and whether deliberate design choices make them addictive and serve up content that leads to depression, eating disorders, or suicide.
